In the heart of early childhood education lies the crucial need for inclusive and supportive environments. At YMCA Day Nursery, we’re dedicated to ensuring every child, regardless of their individual needs, has the opportunity to thrive. This commitment is exemplified by the ongoing development of our SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) provision.

Recently, Tracy Mitchell, our Preschool Room Lead, achieved her Level 3 SENCO qualification. Demonstrating a dedication to continuous improvement, Tracy is now furthering her expertise with the New and Aspiring SENCO course. This proactive approach underscores our commitment to providing the highest quality support for children with SEND.

We’ve also implemented the Graduated Approach in our assessment process. This new way of working allows us to identify children who may benefit from additional support and intervention, ensuring they receive targeted assistance from the earliest possible stage. Our collaboration with the New North Tyneside Early Years Inclusion Service has been instrumental in this process. We’ve witnessed firsthand the positive impact of these interventions, not only on the children’s behavior but also on our staff’s increased knowledge and confidence.

Our commitment to SEND provision extends beyond individual development. Ian, our Nursery Manager, is currently undertaking the SEND Reviewer course. This course involves a comprehensive evaluation of our existing SEND provision, allowing us to reflect on our progress and identify areas for further improvement. This in-depth analysis involves building a portfolio of evidence, which is presented to other settings involved in the course, alongside a peer assessment. This process of shared learning and evaluation is vital for continuous improvement.

Why is all of this so important? Early intervention can make a profound difference in a child’s life. Providing children with the right support from a young age can help them develop the skills and confidence they need to succeed. By investing in our staff’s training and implementing effective assessment and intervention strategies, we’re creating an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and supported.

Our commitment to SEND provision is about more than just meeting regulatory requirements; it’s about building bridges, fostering inclusion, and empowering every child to reach their full potential. It’s about ensuring that every child, regardless of their needs, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
