At YMCA North Tyneside nursery, every day is an adventure filled with exploration, learning, and growth for our youngest members. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to nurture not just their bodies and minds but also their spirits, fostering a sense of belonging, encouraging contribution, and empowering them to thrive. Let’s take a peek into a typical day for a toddler at our YMCA nursery.
Morning: Welcome Rituals and Engaging Activities
As the sun rises, the nursery comes to life with the sound of laughter and excitement. Toddlers arrive to a warm welcome from our dedicated staff, who understand the importance of creating a sense of belonging right from the start. Greetings are personalized, hugs are abundant, and smiles are contagious.
The day kicks off with a morning routine designed to engage the toddlers’ bodies, minds, and spirits. Circle time is a special moment where children gather to sing songs, read stories, and participate in simple mindfulness exercises to center themselves for the day ahead. This sets a positive tone for the morning and helps to build a sense of community among the children.
Mid-Morning: Play Based Learning and Exploration
As the morning progresses, toddlers dive into a variety of play-based learning activities carefully designed to stimulate their curiosity and creativity. Our curriculum is built on the understanding that toddlers learn best through hands-on exploration and discovery.
During sensory based activities, children squish and squeeze, scoop and pour, engaging their senses and developing fine motor skills. Through creative activities and using our artist portfolio, they experiment with colors and textures, expressing themselves through painting, drawing, and sculpting. Outdoors, they run, jump, and climb, developing gross motor skills and connecting with nature.
Throughout these activities, our dedicated Practitioners gently guide and support the toddlers, encouraging them to take risks, try new things, and learn from their experiences. Every moment is an opportunity for growth and development.
Lunchtime: Nourishing Bodies and Building Community
As midday approaches, tummies start to rumble, and it’s time for lunch. Meal times at our nursery are not just about nourishing bodies but also about building community and fostering a sense of contribution. A real time of the nursery family coming together around the table for a meal.
Toddlers help set the table, pour water into cups, and pass dishes to their friends, developing important life skills and learning the value of cooperation and teamwork. As they sit together, sharing stories and laughter, they form bonds that will last a lifetime.
Afternoon: Mindful Moments and Reflection
In the afternoon, as energy levels start to wane, we incorporate mindful moments into our curriculum to help toddlers recharge and refocus. We dim the lights, play soft music, and guide the children through a time of relaxation.
These moments of calm allow toddlers to quiet their minds, tune into their bodies, and connect with their inner spirits. It’s a time for reflection and self-discovery, helping children develop emotional intelligence and resilience.
End of the Day: Celebrating Achievements and Looking Ahead
As the day draws to a close, we gather as a community to celebrate the achievements and milestones of the day. Each child is praised for their contributions, whether big or small, and encouraged to reflect on their experiences.
As toddlers head home, tired but happy, they carry with them the knowledge that they belong to a supportive community where they are valued, where they can contribute meaningfully, and where they have the opportunity to thrive. At our YMCA nursery, we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow and reach their full potential in, body, mind, and spirit.
