Autumn is well and truly upon us, and this time of year offers the perfect opportunity for families to embrace the outdoors with some fun-filled seasonal activities! Exploring the beauty of this season with your little ones not only sparks curiosity with nature but creates lasting memories. Our Day Nursery practitioners have put together some brilliant autumn family fun activities to help you and your little ones enjoy this vibrant time of year.

Have an Autumn Scavenger Hunt

Autumn is the perfect time to get outside and explore nature with your family. Why not organise a family Autumn scavenger hunt to turn a simple walk through the woodland or park into an exciting quest.

Bring with you a list of autumnal nature items to find, such as:

  • Brown, Orange, Yellow, and Red Leaves
  • Twigs
  • Conkers
  • Bark
  • Pinecone
  • Acorn
  • Winged seed
  • Feather

And let the hunt begin!

Create a Family Scrapbook

Capture the magic of your autumn outings by creating a seasonal family scrapbook! It’s the perfect way to preserve special moments from the season, whilst bringing out your child’s artistic side.

Don’t forget to take home some bits and bobs from your scavenger hunt, such as colourful leaves and twigs, to stick into your scrapbook, creating a natural keepsake of the season. Complete this with stickers, stamps, family photos, and plenty of crafty pieces to create the perfect seasonal keepsake to look back on for years to come.

Engage in Seasonal Sensory Fun

Autumn is the perfect time to immerse your little ones in sensory play, exploring the vibrant colours and textures that the season has to offer.

Fill your sensory tray with plenty of fun bits and bobs such as:

  • Colourful water
  • Water Beads
  • Jelly
  • Leaves

These sensory materials will allow your child to have fun splashing, pouring, and feeling different textures.

Not only does sensory play engage children’s curiosity, but it is also a fantastic way to develop fine motor skills, support cognitive development, and keep in touch with seasonal changes!

Eco-friendly Nature Crafts

Autumn is a great time to get stuck in with nature and also protect local wildlife through eco-friendly crafting. Encourage children to connect with the environment by making these simple projects that help creatures prepare for the colder months

Hedgehog Houses: Create a cosy retreat for hedgehogs using a box filled with dry leaves, hay, and straw. Add a layer of waterproof materials such as plastic or bubble wrap on top, and cover the structure with soil and leaves to insulate it. This provides a warm and dry shelter for hedgehogs to hibernate.

Bug Hotels: Bug hotels are easy to make using plenty of recycled materials. Fill a box or small container with natural resources like pinecones, twigs, bark and corrugated cardboard to create hideaways for lots of small insects such as ladybugs, spiders, snails, and woodlice. Place your bug hotel in a sheltered spot for insects to crawl inside and make themselves at home.

Bird Feeders: Create quick and easy bird feeders this autumn by threading cheerios and other bird-friendly grains onto a pipe cleaner. Twist the two ends of the pipe cleaner together to form a simple but effective bird feeder loop to hand in your garden. Your little one’s will love waiting to observe all of the different species of birds coming to your garden to enjoy a tasty treat!
