At YMCA Day Nursery we have adopted a planning style called “In The Moment Planning.” This planning style allows staff to capture a child’s current interests (they can change so much) and plan activities to develop their interests and learning further.
Each child’s interests are tracked on a weekly basis, allowing staff to observe their interactions, take in what makes them tick and plan ahead, providing new and exciting activities each week to keep engagement levels high.
These observations are crucial for developing each key children’s next steps to promote their development and learning even further. In the moment means each child is interested, highly engaged and willing to make he most of every learning experience offered to them.
Why we chose In the Moment Planning:
In the moment planning makes a positive impact on children’s learning and development by providing activities they are really interested in. This style of planning makes key workers focus even further on each of their key children’s interests and helps them to tailor their learning to their interests.
This style of planning also reduces the amount of paperwork for staff to do, allowing them more time to spend with their key children. This helps build an even stronger relationship between staff and their key children.
“In the moment” allows progress for each individual child, no matter where they are up to in their development. It also helps staff to get a clearer picture of where their key child is up to with developmental norms and if children need extra support, they can plan additional activities to suit children’s interests and development stages.
