Here at YMCA Day Nursery, we recognise that returning to work after having a baby can be an emotional time for both you and your child. From balancing routines, to familiarising your child with nursery life, it can be a challenging time for any parent. Here are some top tips for preparing you and your baby for when you return to work.
Practise Routines
To ease your child’s transition to childcare, it’s helpful to practise the routines they’ll experience at nursery before your official return to work. Communicate with your childcare provider about establishing regular naps, mealtimes, and daily activities so that you can begin to implement these into your baby’s routine prior to transitioning to nursery. Being consistent in your child’s daily routine will allow nursery to feel more familiar to them, allowing for a smoother transition.

Spend Time With Other Children
Before returning to work, it’s beneficial to introduce your baby to more group settings and interactions with other children.
This could be in the form of :
– Regular playdates
– Attending baby groups
– Visiting soft play centres
These regular social activities will help them become more accustomed to environments similar to a nursery, improving your baby’s confidence and allowing them to feel more comfortable around other children.
Chat With Your Employer
Communicating with your employer is crucial when returning to work after having a baby. Have a chat with your employer to discuss your needs and boundaries, such as flexible working hours and remote working options.
Being open about your situation will allow you to effectively manage your personal and professional responsibilities, allowing for an easier work-life balance.
Ease Into It
To ensure a smooth transition for both you and your child, it is important to consider a gradual return to work. Some employers may offer a phased return to work, giving you time to familiarise yourself with work-life once again.
A phased return can also be good for your baby, as this time will allow them to adapt to a routine, easing separation anxiety. During this time, it is good to make use of any settling in sessions that your childcare provider may offer.
Settling in sessions can begin as short, 1 hour sessions with you and your baby, which can increase over time to allow your child to gradually familiarise themselves with the environment and build trust with nursery practitioners.

Go Easy On Yourself
Returning to work after having a baby is a big change, and it’s essential to be kind to yourself, both at home and at work.
Allow yourself time to settle into new routines, and recognize that it’s normal to feel overwhelmed at times. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help when you need it.
